Welcome To Buddhist Studies

Central Department of Buddhist Studies (C-DOBS) was established in 1999 as Department of Buddhist Studies under the Central Department of Nepalese Cultural, History and Archeology, the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Tribhuvan Univesity. In the beginning it started one year programme of Post Graduate Diploma in Buddhist Studies. A year later it became an independent and full-fledged Department.

In 2004, Department was upgraded to Central Department of Buddhist Studies and introduced a two-year Master’s degree in Buddhist Studies. Currently it runs one year Post Graduate Diploma, two-year Master’s, one year M.Phil., Ph.D. programmes. Other campuses affiliated with Tribhuvan University are also running PGD and Bachelor’s in Buddhist Studies under the guidance of C-DOBS.

Admission Requirement

Students with Bachelor’s degree from any faculty are eligible to enroll on the PGD courses.
For M.A. programme, B.A. or PGD in Buddhist Studies is mandatory.
Admission to M.Phil. in Buddhist Studies is open to those with M.A. in Buddhist Studies.
The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Tribhuvan University makes an announcement of admission in April/May.

Programmes and Activities

In addition to teaching activities, C-DOBS has programmes and activities as follows:

  • To promote academic exchanges with other academic institutions and departments concerned with Buddhist Studies within and outside Nepal;
  • To act as a venue for contact, affiliation, and coordination of research activities of Nepali and foreign scholars working on Buddhist Studies;
    • To organize national and international workshop and seminar on current issues of Buddhism in Nepal and abroad.
  • To promote and disseminate research works on Buddhism through the publication of Tri-Bodhi, the journal of C-DOBS.
